Geocaching Ideas – building your team image (part three)

Get a team geocaching phone number.

We mentioned before some of the benefits of having a personalized email. We also mentioned that we recommend using gmail for some of their other services. Here is one of those reasons – Google Voice. If you are not familiar with Google Voice, it is a free phone number that you have access to with your google email. Even better, you can can pick whatever number you want (if its not already taken of course). We picked this one:

1 (818) 863-6347 or if you substitute letters  1 (818) 8ME-MFIS

ammo can 3

So, again besides just looking cool there are some practical reasons to have a phone number to use with your favorite hobby. This number can be used as a lifeline for other geocachers going after one of your more devilish hides. This number can be posted on the cache page or even on the cache  without giving out any personal information. It is never a good idea to post your real phone number for the public at large to see. However, with your personalized (and free) Google Voice number, other cacher can make the phone call which will then be forwarded to your phone. One additional benefit quickly surfaces if you happen to be one of the unlucky ones whose cache is found by your local bomb squad.

In order to keep this as a short post I will tease you with one final tidbit. With Google Voice you can have a prerecorded message that callers get when they call your new team phone number. I’m thinking this would make for a good hint, clue, coordinates…you get the point. Check out Google Voice and see what creative use you can come up with. If you come up with something especially creative, please share with the rest of us.

Get out and Play.
