Wherigo tutorial: The first step

The first step is to download a Wherigo builder program. There are a few options. The first is of course the Wherigo Builder from Wherigo.com. A small screenshot is on the right. It is free and not too complicated to use. I started with this one and was able to build several cartridges. I have since moved on and would recommend you do the same. You can access all features but the emulator (testing environment) leaves something to be desired. It is only able to be run on PCs. A downside for many , including me, that use Macs.

That brings us to an online version of the builder created by Ranger Fox called Wherigo Kit. It is online so it solves the problem for Mac users. Ranger Fox is still working on the program however so it has not incorporated all of the features available. You can build a basic cartridge but you will quickly want more.

The third option is the one we use, URWIGO. It is freely available online and fairly easy to use. It has all of the features available so it has a distinct advantage over the Wherigo Kit. It has a very easy ti use emulator so it has an advantage over the builder on the Wherigo site. The only downside I know (besides being exclusive to PCs) of is that it was built in Sweeden so the site to download it is not in English. Its safe but again not in english. Here are instructions on how to download the program.

Go to: www.Urwigo.cz

You will see a page that looks like this:

The button that says “Stáhnout” is the download button. Click it and your download will start. Again, this will not work on a Mac.

Once you have the Urwigo builder downloaded there should be an icon on your desktop. Go ahead, open it it and play around. You won’t hurt anything and it’s free. In the next tutorial, we will jump in and start your first build.
